The less than 10%

"Not everyone can afford to eat well in America, which is a literal shame, but most of us can: Americans spend less than 10 percent of their income on food, less than the citizens of any other nation."
-Michael Pollan,  Food Rules: An Eater's Manual

This blog will most likely be lost among the shuffle of excited new "foodies" that recently started blogging about organics, their urban farming ventures, etc. But if it is not, I would only ask this- as I share what little I know about something as simple as food and as complicated as food politics, please bear in mind this is not rocket science. Food is something we all already know- it is after all, part of our biological makeup and necessary to our survival (and if we listened to our bodies, they are telling us we cannot survive off Easy Mac- sorry). The reality is I am not a rocket scientist, or a nutritionist for that matter. I am only a recent college grad who, through studying the sociology of food, has come to realize America is in a dietary crisis. You do not need the government or a nutritionist to deliver this diagnosis or the remedy. Remedy= We must start eating food (real food) and realize the implications of our food choices. It is not a matter of political statements, trends, or even the saving the earth (although that is a nice second thought). And you surely do not have to be wearing tye-dye or munching granola to appreciate it. Its a matter of life. Food is fun in every stage it exists, and I look forward to sharing that with you. From food culture, to food politics, to my own very humble container vegetable garden- I look forward to allowing food to do what it naturally does- bring people together.
